Working in Partnership: rTMS Referrals and Collaborations
We work in both directions: welcoming referrals into our care, and referring outward to the specialists who can help. Whichever way a patient moves, they stay yours, and you stay informed.
A referral to our private rTMS clinic in London need never feel like a handover. We refer outward as much as we receive, and for clear clinical reasons. We look continually for experts whose care can amplify the effects of rTMS, and where a patient would be better served by another specialist, we are glad to point them there. We see ourselves as one part of the wider network around a patient, and we keep you informed at every stage, returning your patient to you with a full account of what we found and how they responded.
Our ethos
A Brain Health Ecosystem
Good brain health is rarely the work of one discipline alone. Precision neuromodulation is a powerful tool, and rTMS is at its most effective when it forms part of a wider constellation of care, drawing together clinical medicine, psychological therapy, and the daily foundations of sleep, movement and nutrition.
That network runs in both directions. We are glad to receive referrals from across these disciplines, and we refer outward just as readily, connecting patients with the psychologists, pain specialists, nutritionists and sleep specialists whose expertise can support their recovery alongside rTMS treatment. The diagram below sets out the fields we work with, and the two-way relationship we hold with each.
Why work this way? The evidence
There is a sound clinical rationale for working this way. A growing body of evidence suggests that rTMS achieves more when it is delivered within a considered wider programme of care. In one naturalistic study of nearly 200 patients with depression, rTMS delivered alongside psychotherapy produced a 66% response rate and a 56% remission rate, outcomes the authors judged favourable against established treatment approaches (Donse et al., 2018). Physical activity is a further area of active investigation, with evidence that exercise may prime the brain for stimulation through its effects on neuroplasticity. The care that surrounds a patient shapes what rTMS can achieve, which is precisely why we value working in concert with you.
What we offer
Why Clinicians Refer to Naya for rTMS
Naya is a precision neuromodulation clinic in Marylebone, London. We provide repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive treatment recognised by NICE that works at the neural circuits underlying a range of conditions. What sets our rTMS apart is the precision with which we target it.
Naya is the only clinic in the UK to offer heart-brain coupling, also known as neurocardiac-guided rTMS, a targeting method developed by Professor Alexander Sack’s research group and delivered here as standard. For each patient, we identify the stimulation target that produces the clearest physiological signal that the relevant network has engaged, rather than relying on a fixed anatomical coordinate. Personalising treatment in this way is designed to improve the likelihood of response, and progress is measured objectively throughout.
We work across depression, anxiety, OCD, chronic pain and fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, migraine, and the neurological symptoms of menopause, as well as cognitive performance. The strength of the evidence varies by condition, and we are always clear with both patients and referrers about what is well established and what is still emerging.
When to refer
When to Refer a Patient for rTMS
Referring a patient for rTMS can be a valuable option to consider for those who:
- Have treatment-resistant depression, or have not responded fully to medication or therapy, or have found the side effect burden difficult to tolerate.
- Are seeking a non-pharmacological route, whether by preference or because medication is contraindicated.
- Present with overlapping conditions, such as chronic pain alongside low mood, or fatigue alongside anxiety, where a shared neural approach may help.
- Would value objective measurement, to understand and track what is happening at the neurological level.
If you are unsure whether a particular patient is a good candidate, we are always glad to talk it through before any formal referral.
Our commitment to you
What You Can Expect From Us
We value the trust placed in us when you refer a patient for rTMS, and we hold ourselves to a clear set of commitments in return.
A prompt response
We make contact with every referred patient within 24 working hours of receiving their details, so that momentum is never lost between your referral and their first appointment.
High-quality, governed care
Treatment is delivered under carefully defined protocols, led by appropriately qualified specialists, aligned with NICE guidance where applicable, and within a robust clinical governance framework.
Continuity and partnership
We always encourage patients to stay closely connected with their existing clinicians. Where ongoing input from you or other specialists matters, we coordinate around the care team already in place rather than working apart from it.
Clear communication, with consent
With your patient’s consent, we let you know when they have been referred to us, and we keep you informed at each meaningful point in their journey: an assessment letter after the initial consultation, an update partway through treatment, and a discharge letter at the end. Our team remains available throughout should you wish to raise any clinical questions.
A shared clinical conversation
Where it would help, we welcome referring clinicians into our multidisciplinary team discussions. The most considered decisions tend to be reached when those who know a patient are thinking through their care together.
What your patient experiences
Gentle, Considered Care
Your patient is seen by a multidisciplinary team whose backgrounds span psychiatry, general practice, neuroscience and osteopathy. Treatment is delivered in a calm and considered environment. Sessions are short, require no anaesthesia and no recovery time, and most people continue with their day immediately afterwards. rTMS is very well tolerated, with mild and passing side effects where they occur, and a strong safety profile.
Throughout, your knowledge of your patient is something we value. If there is context, history or insight you feel would help us care for them well, we would always welcome hearing it.
A relationship that suits you
Refer on Your Terms
However you prefer to work with us, we will meet you there.
Referring to our rTMS clinic in London can take whatever shape suits you and your patient. At its simplest, it is a straightforward referral: you send a patient our way, we treat them, and we return them to your care at the end, with letters at each stage.
For clinicians who find a genuine and recurring overlap in the patients they see, we are also glad to build something more enduring. A closer partnership is a longer-term relationship rather than an arrangement made around a single patient, and it can take in shared care, coordinated oversight of progress over time, and billing under a single entity. Where the overlap is there, this kind of continuity tends to serve patients well.
